Best PhD Thesis of the Year Award
Honouring Original Scholarship in ESG and Sustainable Development Across Africa
- About The Award
- ❝ The Best PhD Thesis of the Year Award is one of the most meaningful recognitions offered under the ICESDA platform. It exists to celebrate something that often goes unacknowledged: the kind of scholarly work that does not just fill a gap in the literature but genuinely moves the needle on how Africa thinks about ESG, sustainability, and development.
Earning a doctorate is not a purely academic exercise. It is a test of character as much as intellect. The years spent navigating fieldwork, committee feedback, financial pressure, and self-doubt before finally producing a body of original knowledge deserve more than a certificate and a handshake. This award is ICESDA's way of saying: we see that work, and we believe it matters beyond the walls of the university.❞

- Why It Matters
Africa is at a pivotal moment in its sustainability story. The research coming out of African doctoral programmes — often under-resourced and underappreciated on the global stage — is quietly shaping the next generation of climate policy, governance thinking, and community resilience strategy. This award is a deliberate effort to amplify that voice, create visibility for African scholarship, and inspire the next cohort of doctoral researchers who are deciding right now whether the journey is worth it.
- ❝ It is worth it. This award affirms that. ❞
